Ladies Four Patch Vest

Materials: Sport Weight Yarn - 8 (10) ounces of white
         Aluminum Crochet Hook Size F or 4.00 mm (G or 4.50 mm)
         Tapestry Needle

Size: Directions for medium size (10-12) using size F hook; for large size (14-16) use G
hook and follow figures in parenthesis.

Back: With F (G) hook, starting at lower edge ch 93 for both sizes. Work in pattern as
follows:

Four Patch Pattern: Multiple of 12, plus 9.
Row 1: (right side): Dc in 4th ch from hook, dc in each of next 5 ch, * ch 3, then working
sideways dc in top of last dc made (eyelet st made), sk next 2 ch, dc in next ch, ch 3, then
dc in top of last dc made as before (2nd eyelet st made), sk next 2 ch, dc in each of next 7
ch. Rep from * 6 more times. Ch 3, turn.
Row 2: Sk first dc (turning ch-3 counts as first dc), dc in each of next 6 dc, * ch 2, sk 1
eyelet st, dc in next dc, ch 2, sk next eyelet st, dc in each of next 7 dc. Repeat from *
across, working last dc of last repeat in top of ch-3. Ch 6, turn.
Row 3: Last ch-6 made counts for turning ch-3 and then an additional ch-3, dc in 4th ch
from hook for first eyelet st, dc in center dc of 7-dc group, ch 3, dc in top of last dc made
for 2nd eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc in last dc of same group, dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in
top of next dc, dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in first dc of next 7-dc group, * work 1 eyelet st,
sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, work another eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, (dc in each
of next 2 ch, dc in next dc) twice. Rep from * across, end with 1 eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc
in next dc, work another eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc in top of ch-3. Ch 6, turn.
Row 4: Sk first eyelet st, dc in top of next dc between eyelet sts, ch 2, sk next eyelet st, *
dc in each of next 7 dc, ch 2, sk next eyelet st, dc in top of next dc between eyelet sts, ch
2, sk next eyelet st. Rep from * across, end with 7 dc as before, then ch 2, sk next eyelet
st, dc in next dc between eyelet sts, ch 2, sk next eyelet st, dc at base of last eyelet st of
last row. Ch 3, turn.
Row 5: * Dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next dc, dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next dc, work
1 eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc, work another eyelet st, sk next 2 dc, dc in next dc.
Rep from * across, end with dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next dc, dc in each of next 3 ch.
Ch 3, turn.
Rep rows 2 through 5 for pattern until back is about 15 (16 ½”) from beg, ending with row
5 of pattern. At end of last row omit ch-3, break off, turn.
To Shape Armholes:
Row 1: Make lp on hook with yarn. Sk first 7 dc of last row and sk next 2 eyelet sts, join
yarn with sl st in next dc, ch 3 for first dc, dc in each of next 6 dc, continue in pattern
across (by repeating from * on row 2), ending with dc in each of next 7 dc (do not work
last 2 eyelet sts and last 7 dc). Ch 6, turn. Work even in pattern until armholes measure
about 9 ½ (10)” in all, ending with row 2 of pattern. Ch 1, turn.
To Shape First Shoulder:
Sc in each of first 3 sts, hdc in each of next 4 sts, (dc in each of next 2 ch, dc in next dc)
twice, dc in each of next 6 sts. Break off. For neck sk center sts, rejoin yarn and work last
19 sts in reverse for second shoulder. Break off.

Fronts:
Make 2, reversing armhole shaping on 2nd front.
Work F (G) hook, starting at lower edge ch 45 for both sizes. Work even in four patch
pattern stitch (same as for back) to get of armhole shaping. On one front, at end of last
row omit ch-3, break off, turn.
To Shape Armhole:
Row 1: At side edge only, rep row 1 of back armhole. Work even in pattern until armhole
measures about 6 (6 ½”) from beg, ending at armhole edge.
To Shape Neck:
Next Row: Work across in pattern as established to within last repeat of pattern, about 2
½ (2 ¾”) fro front edge (do not work these remaining sts), turn. Work even until armhole
is same length as back armhole to shoulder, ending at armhole edge. Ch 1, turn.
To Shape Shoulder:
Rep first shoulder shaping row of back. Break off.

Finishing:
Weave in ends.
Seams: From wrong side of work, sew or crochet shoulder and side seams.
Outer Border: Join yarn in lower left front corner of vest and sc across entire lower edge
to right front corner, then continue across right from edge, neck edge and left front edge
as follow: * Ch 2, 2 dc at base of ch-2, sk ½” of edge of work, sc in edge of work. Rep
from * across to first sc. Join and break off.
Armhole Border: Join yarn at underarm seam and rep from * of outer border around entire
armhole. Join and break off. Rep around other armhole. Block lightly on wrong side, if
desired.
