Granny Square Dog Sweater

Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn 2 (3-4) oz each of navy, med blue, lt blue and ecru
         Aluminum Crochet Hook Size E or 3.5mm for small; Size G or 4.0 mm for
            Medium; Size I or 5.50 mm for Large
         Plastic Buckle 1”
         Bone rings for Buttons 1 (½”)

Approximate Finished Sizes: Small 13” x 14”
                                       Medium 14” x 15”
                                       Large 15” x 16”

3-Rnd Granny Square: (make 10):
With navy, ch 4; join with sl st in beg ch to form a ring.
Rnd 1: With same colour, ch 3 (counts as first dc now and throughout), 2 dc in ring, (ch 1,
3 dc in ring) 3 times, ch 1; join with sl st in 3rd ch of beg ch-3 (now and throughout); finish
off leaving 4” end to be woven in later.
Rnd 2: Join med blue with sl st in any ch-1 sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp (corner
made), * ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 sp; rep from * twice, ch 1; join as before;
finish off.
Rnd 3: Join lt blue with sl st in any ch-1 corner sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp as
joining, * ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc), in next ch-1 corner sp; rep
from * twice, ending ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; join as before; finish off.

4-Rnd Granny Square: (make 6):
Work same as 3-rnd Granny Square thru rnd 3.
Rnd 4: Join ecru with sl st in any ch-1 corner sp, (ch 3, 2 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in same sp as
joining, * (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1, (3 dc, ch 1, 3 dc) in next ch-1 corner sp;
rep from * twice, ending (ch 1, 3 dc in next ch-1 sp) twice, ch 1; join as before; finish off.

Finishing:
Holding 2 like squares right sides tog, join navy with sl st thru ch of ch-1 corner sp of both
squares, ch 1, work sc in each dc and in each ch along one side of both squares, ending
sc in last dc before next ch-1 corner; finish off. Repeat to join all 3-rnd squares in 2 strips
of 5 squares each and 4-rnd squares in 2 strips of 3 squares each. Working into end of
sc joining between 4-rnd squares but skipping end of sc joining between 3-rnd squares,
work in similar manner to join strips as shown in diagram.

Edging:
Rnd 1: Join navy with sl st in any ch-1 sp along outer edge, ch 2, hdc in each dc, in each
ch-1 sp and in end of each sc joining between squares around entire piece, working 2 hdc
in each outer ch-1 corner; join with sl st in 2nd ch of beg ch-2; finish off.

Collar:
Row 1: Holding piece right side facing, join med blue with sl st in corner marked with a (*)
in diagram. Working across center two squares only, ch 3, 3 dc in same st as joining, * ch
1, sk 2 hdc, 4 dc in next hdc; rep from * across; ch 3, turn; 13 - 4 dc-groups
Row 2: * 5 tr in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from * across, ending dc in top of ch-3; ch 3, turn.
Row 3: * 4 dc in 3rd tr of next 5-tr group, ch 1, 4 dc in next ch-1 sp, ch 1; rep from *
across, ending 4 dc in 3rd tr of last 5-tr group, ch 1, dc in top of turning ch; finish off.
Row 4: Holding piece right side facing, join navy with sl st in same hdc as joining in row 1
of collar, ch 2, 2 hdc in ch-3 sp at beg of row 1, 2 hdc in sp at end of row 2, 2 hdc in ch-3
at beg of row 3, hdc in each dc and in each ch-1 sp across row 3, 2 hdc in sp at end of
row 3, 2 hdc in sp at end of row 1, hdc in same hdc as last 4-dc group worked on row 1;
finish off. Weave in all yarn ends.
Button: (make 2):
Insert hook through one bone ring and with med blue, pull up a loop, leaving 4” end of
yarn, yo and pull thru loop, sc in ring until ring is tightly covered; join with sl st in first sc.
Finish off leaving 5” strand. Thread sewing strand and back thru center of ring and use
with length left at beg to sew button on one outer corner of 3-rnd square at left front.
Repeat for second button.
Note: Ch-1 corner sps on 3-rnd square of right front are used as buttonholes.

Belt:
Row 1: With med blue, ch 6, dc in 4th ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 3, turn. 4 dc
Row 2: Dc in 2nd dc and in next dc, ending dc in top of turning ch; ch 3, turn. Rep row 2
until piece measures 20 (22-24)” or length to fit around dog’s chest. At end of last row, do
not ch; finish off. Join navy with sl st in corner dc at end of belt, ch 2. Working around
entire belt, work 2 hdc in sp at end of each row and hdc in each dc on each end; join with
sl st in beg hdc; finish off.
Buckle:
With navy, work same as button to cover entire outer edge of buckle. Slip one end of belt
(right side facing) thru buckle and over bar in center; sew to wrong side of belt. Sew
center of belt to center seam of coat, 1 square down from collar.
