By The Light of Angels Afghan

Materials: Knitting Worsted Yarn; 40 ozs White, 24 ozs Green, 8 ozs Red
       Crochet Hook Size G or 4.50 mm
       Tapestry Needle

Note: To change colours, always draw new colour through last 2 lps of old colour. To
conceal colour not being used, work over it. Afghan is worked in 5 separate strips.
Alternating design motifs with solid colour motifs forms a checkerboard pattern. When
following chart, work right side rows from right to left and wrong side rows from left to
right.

First Strip: (Sold Motif):
With white, ch 43.
Row 1: (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook in each ch across. Ch 1, turn at end of
each row throughout. (42 sc)
Rows 2-43: Sc in each sc across. At end of last row only, ch 4 (instead of ch-1), turn.
Row 44: (wrong side): * Sk 1 sc, dc in next sc, ch 1. Rep from * across to last 3 sc,
end ch 2, sk 2 sc, dc in last sc. Continue with white, ch 1, turn.

Angel Motif: (right side):
Row 1: Sc in first dc, work 2 sc in ch-2 sp, then work sc in each dc and in each ch-1
sp across, sc in 3rd ch of turning ch. (42 sc)
Rows 2-5: Sc in each sc across.
Row 6: (wrong side): With white sc in each of first 19 sc (changing to green on last
sc); working over white, with green sc in each of next 7 sc (changing to white on last
sc); drop green to wrong side of work, then with white sc in each of remaining 16 sc.
Starting with row 7, following chart for design, and colour key for colours to end of
chart (43 in all). At end of last row only, ch 4, turn.
Row 44: (wrong side): Rep row 44 of solid motif.
Next 3 Motifs: Rep solid motif, angel motif and solid motif. End last motif with row 43.
Don not ch 4 or rep row 55 (5 motifs on strip). Break off. Be sure that the first 4
motifs of each strip end with row 44 (only 5th motif ends with row 43).

Second Strip: (angel motif):
With white, ch 43.
Row 1: (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. Ch 1, turn at end
of each row throughout. (42 sc).
Rows 2-5: Sc in each sc across. Starting with row 6, complete Angel motif same as on
first strip, to end row 44. Do not break off.
Next 4 Motifs: Rep (solid motif and angel motif) twice. End last motif with row 43. Do
not ch 4 or rep row 44 (5 motifs on strip). Break off.

Third and Fifth Strips: Rep Second Strip.

Fourth Strip: Rep Second Strip.

Finishing: Weave in all ends.

Inside Border:
Work the following border on one long edge of first four strips only. Work along entire
left side edge from top to lower edge. D not work border along 5th strip. With right
side facing you, join white with sl st in corner st at top edge of left side edge, ch 4, sk
1 row, dc in next row, * ch 1, sk 1 row, dc in next row (be sure to keep work flat). Rep
from * across. At end of row, break off.

Joining:
Hold first two strips together with border just made on joining edge, and right sides of
each on the inside. Sew or crochet strips together with white yarn. Join all remaining
strips together and join to first 2 strips in same manner.

Outer Border:
Rnd 1: Join white yarn in any corner of afghan with sl st ; in same st work (ch 4, dc,
ch 1, dc, ch 1 and dc) * work ch 1, sk 1 row or 1 st, dc in next row or st, be sure to
keep work flat) across to next corner, in corner work (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc). Rep
from * around, join.
Rnd 2: Ch 3, dc in ch-1 space, work 2 dc in each ch-1 sp around, join to top of ch-3
and break off.
Rnd 3: With red, sc in each dc around, join and break off. Block lightly, if desired.
