Bow Tie Potholder
Materials: Worsted Weight Yarn 100 gm Balls; One Skein Each of Dk Blue, Lt Blue &
Rose
Crochet Hook Size 5/F or 3.75 mm
Patch #1
With light blue, ch 15.
Row 1: (right side): Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across; turn–14 sts.
Rows 2-9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn.
Row 10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across to last 2 sts, sc dec; turn–13 sts.
Row 11: Ch 1, sc dec, sc in each sc across; turn–12 sts.
Row 12 & 13: Rep rows 10 and 11.
Row 14: Ch 1, sc across to last 2 sts, sc dec–9 sts. Fasten off.
Patch #2 (center square):
With right side of patch #1 facing, join dark blue with a sl st in edge st of slanted side
and on row 10.
Row 1: (right side): Ch 1, sc in same st as joining, work 5 more sc evenly across
slanted edge; turn–6 sts.
Rows 2-6: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. At end of row 6, fasten off.
Patch #3
With right side facing, join light blue with a sl st in st at right edge of patch #2.
Row 1: (right side): Ch 10, sc in 2nd ch from hook and each ch across–9 sts; sl st in
same sc as joining, sl st in next sc of patch #2; turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc inc, sc in each sc across; turn–10 sts.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc across to last st, sc inc–11 sts; sl st in next 2 sc of patch #2; turn.
Row 4: Rep row 2–12 sts.
Row 5: Rep row 3–13 sts.
Row 6: Rep row 2–14 sts.
Rows 7-14: Ch 1, sc in each sc across; turn. At end of row 14, fasten off.
Patch #4
Turn work so patch #3 forms the lower right hand corner. With right side facing, join
rose with a sl st at right edge of patch #3.
Row 1: (right side): Ch 1, sc in same sp, work 8 sc evenly spaced along patch #3–9
sc; sl st in rows 6 and 5 of patch #2; turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc inc, sc in each sc across; turn–10 sc.
Row 3: Sc across to last sc, sc inc in last sc–11 sc; sl st in rows 4 and 3 of patch #2;
turn.
Row 4: Rep row 2–12 sc.
Row 5: Rep row 3–13 sc; sl st in rows 2 and 1 of patch #2; turn.
Row 6: Rep row 2–14 sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in each of the 14 sc across; sl st in next 2 sc of patch #1; turn.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in each across; turn.
Rows 9-14: Rep rows 7 and 8, sl stitching to corresponding sc of patch #1.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in each of the 14 sc; sl st in last sc of patch #1. Fasten off.
Patch #5
Turn work so unworked portion is at top right hand corner. With right side facing, join
rose with a sl st at right edge of patch #1.
Row 1: (right side): Ch 1, sc in same sp, work 8 more sc evenly across patch #1–9
sc; sl st in rows 1 and 2 of patch #2; turn.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc inc, sc in each sc across; turn–10 sc.
Row 3: Ch 1, sc across to last sc, sc inc in last sc–11 sc; sl st in rows 3 and 4 of
patch #2; turn.
Row 4: Rep row 2–12 sc.
Row 5: Rep row 3–13 sc; sl st in rows 5 and 6 of patch #2; turn.
Row 6: Rep row 2–14 sc.
Row 7: Ch 1, sc in 14 sc; working along opposite side of beg ch from patch #3, sl st
in first 2 ch; turn.
Row 8: Ch 1, sc in 14 sc; turn.
Rows 9-14: Rep rows 7 and 8, sl st in corresponding chs of patch #3.
Row 15: Ch 1, sc in 14 sc; sl st in last ch. Fasten off.
Inside Border:
With right side facing, join dark blue in 7th sc along right edge of patch #5 with a sl st.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st sc in each sc of patch #5, sc in intersection, work 13 sc
evenly spaced across patch #3; for corner (sc, ch 2, sc); for 2nd side, sc in 13 sc of
patch 3, sc in intersection, work 13 sc evenly spaced across patch #4 and (sc, ch 2,
sc) for corner; work 3rd and 4th sides as for side 2, then sc in each rem sc of patch
#5; sl st in beg sc and fasten off–29 sc on each side.
Finishing:
Make a 2nd side as for first, including inside border. Weave in loose ends on wrong
side of fabric.
Outer Border:
Hold wrong sides tog with patch #5 at upper right edge and work through both layers.
With right side facing, join dark blue in 5th sc to left of patch #5 corner with a sl st.
Rnd 1: Ch 1, sc in same st, sc in each sc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each
corner ch-2 sp; sl st in beg sc.
Rnd 2: * Ch 3, sk 1 sc, sl st in next sc* ; rep from * to corner; ch 3, sk 1 sc in ch-2 sp
(cl st, ch 3, sl st) ** ; rep bet* ‘s 8 times; for hanging lp (ch 15, sl st in 2nd ch from
hook and rem ch. Remove lp from hook and insert hook in first sl st at top of hanging
lp, pick up dropped lp and draw through st on hook), sl st in same sc as last sc; rep
from * to ** around, ending sl st in same sl st as joining. Fasten off.
