Materials: Knitting Worsted Weight Yarn 3 ½ oz Skeins; 5 oz White, 3 oz Med Blue,
2 oz Dk Brown, 1 oz each of Lt Brown, Red, Green Yellow & Dk Blue
Aluminum Crochet Hook Size J or 6.00 mm
Tapestry Needle
Finished Size Approximately 40” x 46”
Gauge 3 dc = 1”; 6 dc rnds = 3 ½”
Afghan:
Center: With white ch 21, sc in 6th ch from hook, (ch 2, sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch) 5
times. Do not turn.
Rnd 1: Ch 3 for first dc, in first sp work 2 dc, ch 3, 6 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (2 corners made);
(3 dc in next ch-2 sp) 4 times, in last sp work 3 dc, ch 3, 6 dc, ch 3 and 3 dc (2 corners
made), then working across opposite edge of center, work 3 dc in each of next four ch-2
sp. Join with sl st in top of ch-3. Join all dc rnds in same manner throughout afghan.
Rnd 2: Sl st in each of next 2 dc, sl st in ch-3 sp, ch 3, in same sp work 2 dc, ch 3, 3 dc for
first corner; * sk next 3 dc of same corner, work 3 dc in sp before next 3-dc group, sk 3 dc,
work corner of 3 dc, ch 3, 3 dc in next ch-3 corner sp; (sk next 3 dc, work 3 dc in sp
before next dc) 5 times; work corner in next corner sp. Rep from * once more, join.
Rnd 3: Sl st in each of next 2 dc, sl st in corner sp, ch 3 and complete first corner, * work
(sk 3 dc, 3 dc in sp before next dc) across to corner, work corner in corner sp. Rep from *
around, join.
Rnds 4-6: Rep rnd 3. At end of last rnd; join, drop white, do not break off. Join Med Blue.
Rnd 7: With Med Blue, in any corner sp work sc, ch 3, sc, then * work (ch 3, sk 3 dc, sc in
sp before next dc) across to sp before next corner, ch 3, in corner sp work sc, ch 3, sc.
Rep from * around, end ch 3, join with sl st in first sc. Break off Med Blue.
Rnd 8: Hold blue chain lps of last rnd forward, with white work behind lps, and into sts of
last white rnd. Insert hook in dropped white lp, sl s tin each of next 2 dc; sl s t in corner sp,
ch 3 and complete first corner, * work, (3 dc, in center dc of next 3-dc group) to corner,
work corner in corner sp. Rep from * around, join.
Rnds 9-13: With white, rep rnd 3 for pattern. At end of last rnd, drop white, join medium
blue.
Rnd 14: With Med Blue, rep rnd 7.
Rnds 15-20: With White, rep rnds 8-13.
Rnd 21: With Med Blue, rep rnd 7.
Rnds 22-27: Working 4 rnds with White and 2 rnds with Med Blue, rep rnds 8-13.
Rnd 28: With White, rep rnd 7.
Rnds 29-34: With Med Blue, rep rnds 8-13.
Rnd 35: With White, rep rnd 7. Break off.
Balloons:
Note: Blue balloon has only 7 rnds, red one has 9 rnds. If desired, you can make all of
them the same size. Make 1 each in green, red, yellow and dk blue. Starting in center ch 2.
Rnd 1: Work 6 sc n 2nd ch from hook. Join with sl st in ch-2 sp. Do not join following rnds.
Rnd 2: Work 2 sc n each sc around (12 sc).
Rnd 3: * Sc in next sc 2 sc in next sc. Rep from * around (18 sc).
Rnd 4: * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in each of next 2 sc. Rep from * around (24 sc).
Rnd 5: * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in each of next 3 sc. Rep from * around.
Rnd 6: Sc in each of next 2 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 4 sc. Rep from * around.
Rnd 7: * 2 Sc in next sc, sc in each of next 5 sc. Rep from * around.
Rnd 8 : Sc in each of next 3 sc, * 2 sc in next sc, sc in each of next 6 sc. Rep from *
around (48 sc). Sl st in next sc and break off.
Bear:
Face: With dk brown, work same as for balloon.
Ear: (make 2): Starting in center, with lt brown, ch 4.
Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, 2 hdc in each of next ch, sc in last ch. Break off.
Row 2: Sc in first st, 2 hdc in each of next 2 sts, sc in last st. Break off.
Row 3: With dk brown, work across shaped edge only, as follows: * sc in next st, 2 sc in
next st. Rep from * , end with sc in last st. Break off, leaving end of yarn for sewing.
Nose: Working as for balloons, with dk brown, work to end of rnd 1. Break off. Join lt
brown and rep rnd 2; then working as for rnd 3, work only halfway around. Break off.
Body:
With lt brown, ch 7.
Rnd 1: Work 3 sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in each of next 4 ch, work 3 sc in last ch; then
working along opposite side of starting ch work 1 sc in each of next 4 ch, join with sl st in
first sc for beg of oval shape.
Rnds 2-5: Continue in sc, with lt brown; sc in each sc around, and at each end of oval,
work 2 sc in each of 3 sc. Join as before. At end of last rnd, break off. Work in rows from
now on.
Row 1: Sk next 4 lt brown sc, with dk brown sc in next sc and in each sc around to last lt
brown sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in next sc, hdc in next sc, dc in next sc, 2 dc in each of next 2 sc, dc in each of
next 2 sc, 2 dc in each of next 2 sc, dc in next sc, hdc in next sc, sc in next sc (omit rem
sts). Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Rep last row, but start with sc in each of next 10 sc (instead of 1 sc). At end of row
continue in sc across lt brown sts. Break off.
Feet: (make 2):
Working as for balloons, with lt brown work to end of rnd 3. Break off, then rep rnd 4 with
dk brown. At end of rnd 4, turn. Work in short rows from now on.
Row 1: Sc in each of next 6 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 2: Sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 3: Sc in each of next 3 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 4: Sc in each of next 2 sc. Break off.
Paws: (make 2):
Work as for balloons, with lt brown work to end of rnd 2. Break off. Work in rows from now
on.
Row 1: With dk brown, sc in each of next 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Rows 2-7: Work even on 4 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 8: (short row): Sc in each of first 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 9: Work even on 2 sc. Ch 1, turn.
Row 10: Sc in each of next 2 sc, then sc in each of 2 skipped sc’s on last 4-sc row (this
forms elbow in paw). Ch 1, turn. Work even on 4 sc for 4 more rows. Break off.
Finishing:
Weave in all ends (except ones needed for sewing).
Bear: Following photo, sew ears and nose on face, sew face to body at neck. Edge. Sew
both paws and feet in place. With med blue yarn, embroider eyes on face, with French
knots. Applique bear in lower left hand corner of afghan, with matching yarn.
Balloons: Pin all 4 balloons to afghan, in upper right hand corner (see photo). Applique in
place.
Strings: With tapestry needle and dk brown, embroider strings (using chain stitches), from
1 paw to each balloon (see photo), leaving about 3” of yarn free at edge of bear’s paws.
